A Memorial for El Tomate The land inhabited by a tiny fishing village called El Tomate in the town of San Carlos, Sonora, Mexico, was bought by a developer in the summer of 2007, with the intent of transforming the area by building condos, homes, a boat dock or small marina, a paved road, and possible other collateral commercial amenities. Immediately after the announcement of the project, the developer approached the men who fished there and paid them some money. Within several weeks all their shacks were bulldozed. And when the construction of the developer’s project comes to fruition, the adjacent tide pools of “Bouldery Beach” teeming with sea and shore creatures, will surely also be threatened. Later attempts at reversal of the effects of development would be difficult if not impossible. This art installation is intended to educate the public as to the importance of the sustainability of both the environment and the traditional cultural lifestyle of its inhabitants, and more directly the extraordinarily sensitive culture and bioregion of the Sea of Cortez. The installation is available for hanging in galleries, museums, and other art or science venues. It is also for sale in whole or part. Click here to enter the Installation Gallery
